Reid – Why Blog?

In reading Reid’s article, the most striking insight I was caught by was his interpretation of intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivations. I was especially captured when he said students “can find it difficult to get beyond the mindset of ‘what do I need to do to get an A?'” I am planning to go to law school next year and the motivation for this decision is one of the most important aspects of your applications. Law schools want to know that their students are motivated by something more than grades because it is a rigorous three years and people who are motivated extrinsically often are unable to finish. The most successful students under this program do not focus on their grades, but rather are motivated by a true desire to become better lawyers and they know the grades will follow this dedication.

The audience of this blog, at least at the beginning of this project, is the students of this class. I hope that it will be a projection of both my personality and my professional aspirations and a good working sample of my work. To further this purpose, the content and design choices will be professional but also provide insights into my own way of thinking and view of the world. It will be sort of a mixture of opinion and professionalism that should serve well in a class dealing with the forward-thinking material we will be covering. When we delve into more controversial issues, I think that having a professional and personal blog is the best option as it will allow me to express opinions openly and make clear that I understand their position as opinion, not fact, while still maintaining a respectful air to the readers of this blog and my fellow students.

It will be very interesting for me to pursue this endeavor as I have very little experience in the digital space as a personality. I am not very active on social media and I generally use media as a means of current events and entertainment. This class will be the first time I have really maintained a digital presence for an extended period of time that is purely my own, and I am excited by that prospect.
